An uncommon (in South Africa at least) and an interesting tree!

🌳 Tree Characteristics:
Size: Grows up to 20 meters (65 feet) tall with a trunk diameter of 30-80 cm (12-31 inches).
Leaves: Large, thick, and glossy green. Young trees may have lobed leaves, while older trees have smooth-edged leaves.

Flowers: Small and unisexual, borne on dense inflorescences that grow directly from the trunk and branches.

Lifespan: Can live for 60 to 70 years.

🌳 Fruit characteristics:
Size: The largest tree-borne fruit in the world, typically weighing between 4.5-27 kg, but can reach up to 55 kg.

Length: Can reach up to 90 cm in length.

Yield: A mature tree can produce 150-200 fruits per year, with older trees producing up to 500!

Composition: A multiple fruit composed of hundreds of individual flowers that merge into one large fruit. It has a bumpy rind and contains many seed-containing, sweet, yellow bulbs inside.

Maturity: Takes 5-7 years for a tree to produce fruit. Fruits mature 3-8 months after flowering, signaled by a colour change to yellow-brown and a hollow sound when tapped.

🌳 Uses:
Culinary: Both unripe and ripe fruits are consumed. The unripe fruit has a mild taste and meat-like texture, making it a popular meat substitute in vegan cooking. Ripe fruit is sweet and used in desserts. The seeds are also edible.

Wood: The wood is used for making musical instruments (like drums and harps), furniture, and even religious statues. It is also used to construct houses, doors, and roofs.

Medicinal: Various parts of the tree are used in traditional medicine. The latex, leaves, root, and bark are used for treating a range of ailments.

Dye: The inner part of the wood can be used to create a light-brown dye for Buddhist monks' robes.
