White Sapote is native to the highlands of Central Mexico and was well known to the Aztecs!

It's a subtropical to tropical fruit that prefers a climate with moderate humidity.

Trees generally start producing fruit within 3 to 5 years after planting, with full maturity and peak production potentially taking 7 to 10 years.

In temperate regions (colder winters) it must be planted in a sheltered, sunny space. But young trees will benefit from dappled light, similar to young avocado trees. 

It is a medium to large, evergreen tree with a semi upright to drooping habit. 

White Sapote seedlings are unlike trees propagated from cuttings, or air-layering, and have a strong tap root system which helps them to thrive, especially if you can provide them with some deep soil. However, they adapt well to areas with shallower soils and even milder climates provided otherwise well looked after in the first year or two after planting. 

Small flowers are formed in large groups and may occur off and on a few times per year - with fruit ripening 6-8 months later.  The ripe fruit is quite perishable, as it's picked at peak ripeness with a thin skin and soft flesh. Best eaten right off the tree, or taken straight to the kitchen for a super yummy rich and tropical flavoured snack. So eat fresh for the best experience! 

It is primarily a dessert fruit and tastes like vanilla custard mixed with creamy banana, custard, caramel, and a hint of peaches and  pineapple. A pudding fruit to say the least! The soft fruity flesh may be halved and scooped out, similar to how you would eat an avocado. But the skin is edible. There are some large seeds, easily recognised and removed. 

White Sapote fruit can get quite sweet (27% sugars), is highly nutritious, and rich in vitamins including A and C. The pulp is smooth and has no noticeable fibre, some describing the texture as pudding-like.  Combine with milk to produce ice creams, milk shakes or smoothies. With added lemon or lime juice, the fruit makes a good jelly and sherbets. It may also be frozen whole, as pieces or as a pulp. Taste is not affected after thawing and may be used like fresh fruit. Yummy in smoothies.

Pick fruits as they begin to soften.  Do not wait too long as fallen fruit tend to smash when they drop due to their soft flesh. Colour on maturity ranges from dark green to yellow and will lighten a shade when ready for harvest.


Fun fact! The fruit helps to calm you down before bed, and it's has been reported that a tea produced from the leaves would induce sleep within an hour.
