Vintage Brownie Flash B Camera.

Produced from 1958-1960 so had a very small production run compared to the others. Just look at it…

This brownie has so many things going for it that distinguish it from the other Brownies I have tried.

It is very easy to clean the viewfinders and mirrors, just pop off the front.
The said viewfinders are nice and big, and once cleaned, very bright.
It has a choice of three speeds which are stated on the camera, no guessing. The choices are 1/40th 1/80th and B. With a set f11 aperture.
The 1/80th speed is quicker than most Brownies which are usually around 1/50th.
There is a built in close-up lens for subjects 5-10ft away.
There is a built in filter for brighter days or faster films.
Both of those filters are labeled on the pull out tabs.
There is a guide to settings on the camera. Though it is for Kodak film from the time. It is useful to know Tri-X is rated 200 ISO, Veri-Pan is 125 ISO and Pan X 32 ISO.
The skin is good quality and can be glued back in place unlike the paper-ish covered versions.
You can take multiple exposures.
There is a flash slot if you happen to have a flash and bulbs.
It is Brown, it really is a ‘Brownie’ hence the ’emphatic’ use of quotation marks.
It uses 620 film.

Kodak introduced their first Brownie camera in February 1900. It was a simple cardboard box, with a simple single element lens, it cost $1 and it revolutionised photography, handing it to the masses. Considering the Brownie Flash B was introduced almost 60 years later, the camera really isn’t much different from the original. Manufactured in England, it’s a brown painted metal box, with tan leatherette covering and brass coloured trim.


Up front there’s an f/11 rated meniscus lens with shutter speeds of 1/40th and 1/80th of a second, or the option to hold open the shutter as long as you want. Also on the front of the camera there are two small lenses that “feed” the two reflecting viewfinders for landscape and portrait compositions.

All of the controls, such as they are, adorn the right hand side of the Brownie.  Here is the lever for selecting shutter speed. There are two pull out sliders, one for the close-up lens, and another for the yellow cloud filter for helping enhance sky shots when shooting with black and white film. To help determine correct settings, there’s a handy exposure table, the film winding knob and shutter button are also here.


Description:
This attractive and functional metal body Brownie Camera features a distinct light brown leatherette covering with a horizontally striped front panel. It has the two brilliant finders found on many box Briwnies in addition to the somewhat uncommon pin and screw flash contacts allowing for many different Kodak flash units to be used. It's rounded off with a built in slidable sky filter and a handy exposure guide on the side of the camera.

Fun Facts:
I consider the Brownie Flash B Camera one of the more handsome, and functional, of the Kodak box cameras. When you hold it you can feel the added quality that many box cameras lack. The additional control via it's variable shutter speeds including a "B" setting, a built in close-up lens, and even a built in filter, make this abit more than a point and shoot box camera. If you find one, get it and use it and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the results!
