Description: Stunning Pair of Mid-Century Italian Stone (or Alabaster) Carved Roosters. 

The roosters were made by Cora Originale in Italy, as identified by the foil labels on their bases. This company produced vintage Italian ceramic figurines, and items with this specific marking are sought after by collectors. 

The style of these figurines embodies a sense of warmth and rusticity. Rooster figurines are a common motif in Italian homes, symbolizing good luck, protection, and prosperity. Different regions in Italy developed their own unique motifs and palettes, such as the Renaissance motifs of Tuscany or the vivid hues of Vietri sul Mare. The "Cora Originale" roosters have a distinct colour wash applied to the base, which may point to a specific regional style or a mid-20th-century trend towards informal, experimental glazes. These figurines represent a continuation of a millenary tradition rooted in Etruscan and Roman eras, passed down through generations of skilled artisans

The rooster is a very significant symbol in Italian culture, primarily representing good luck, prosperity, protection, and vigilance. The tradition dates to a well-known legend from 15th-century Florence. The Legend of the Rooster originates from a story involving two rival and powerful Florentine families: the Medici and the Pazzi. The Plot: In 1478, the Pazzi family plotted to assassinate Giuliano de' Medici during a lavish feast he was hosting in the village of Gallina (which fittingly means "chicken" in Italian). Late at night, as the assassins attempted to sneak into the village, they crossed a yard full of roosters. The birds began crowing and cackling so loudly that they woke Giuliano and his guards. The Outcome: The assassins were caught, and Giuliano's life was saved. The Pazzi family was subsequently banished from Florence. 

Modern Symbolism
Grateful for the roosters' role, Giuliano ordered local artisans to create ceramic replicas of the birds to be used as wine pitchers (La Brocca di Gallo). These were given to the villagers as a symbol of good fortune and protection against danger. Today, the ceramic rooster remains a popular staple in Italian homes and is a traditional gift for weddings or housewarmings, intended to bring continued good luck and guard the household from misfortune. They also represent hope, renewal, and the start of a new day. 

Made in Italy, 1950’s-1960’s.

Visible Flaws: Minor age-related wear. The bellies must have been handled often when cleaning as the paint is no longer visible there. There are also some minor chips in the comes, please ask for more photos if you would like to see.
