I inherited this gold and leopard tooth pendant from my Dad. It is about 60 years old. Please note that this tooth was acquired through natural causes and not hunted.

I am looking to sell it for the gold value only. (Much lower than the estimated gold value = R 2,997.36 - see below)

Should you wish to keep the pendant with the tooth you would have to apply for the applicable certificate (R400). https://www.capenature.co.za/permits/cites-permits (This would obviously allow you to sell the pendant on for quite a large amount of money) - Conservative price: R15,000 – R18,000 (just above intrinsic gold value, appeals to careful buyers) / Collector-focused price: R18,000 – R25,000 (reflecting rarity and antique appeal)

Height = 5 mm
Volume = 15 × 10 × 5 = 750 mm³
Convert to cubic centimeters: 750 ÷ 1000 = 0.75 cm³
Step 2: Approximate mass
Gold density = 19.32 g/cm³
Mass = 0.75 × 19.32 ≈ 14.49 g
Step 3: Adjust for 9-carat gold
9-carat gold = 37.5% pure gold
Pure gold mass = 14.49 × 0.375 ≈ 5.43 g
Step 4: Estimate value in South Africa
Current gold price ≈ R1,380 per gram
Gold value = 5.43 × 1,380 ≈ R7,493.40
