the poster was created in 1896 by swiss artist théophile alexandre steinlen. 

it was originally an advertisement for a tour of the famous parisian cabaret, le chat noir, founded by rodolphe salis. 

the striking image of a black cat has become a lasting symbol of the bohemian montmartre art scene of the late 19th century. 

the print in the image is framed in a dark wood frame with a beige matting.
