The third in a three-volume collection of works by Frances G. Wickes, The Inner World of Choice represents an elaboration and amplification of themes developed in her first two works, The Inner World of Childhood and The Inner World of Man. In her final work, Wickes analyzes how the inner development of the individual psyche is a function of a series of inner choices, conscious or unconscious, imposed on the individual by personal and collective experiences, from childhood traumas to universal archetypes.

Relying on techniques usually associated with short stories, Wickes presents a series of case studies, each of them concentrating on a particular inner conflict, and each having to be resolved by an individual choice. Wickes's technique is exceedingly effective, not only in conveying the sense of dilemma that pervades every aspect of our lives, but also in showing that the resolution of those dilemmas is absolutely necessary to our growth into conscious and caring individuals.
