We all dream. We dream as naturally and as inevitably as we think or feel. But while we seem to understand our thoughts and feelings, the chaotic images of the night seem often strange and inexplicable, even alien. Yet men of all times and of all societies have believed dreams to be meaningful and have sought to interpret the messages they carry.

Many of the earliest interpretations of dream symbols were crude and over-simple, but they were the precursors of the refined, sophisticated interpretations of the modern psychotherapist. It psychotherapis was Freud who achieved the breakthrough, who saw that-in his own words-dreams are "the royal road to the unconscious."

It was Freud, too, who questioned why we dream and suggested that the purpose of our dreams is to act as the "guardians of sleep"- to dispose, in a way that demands no response, of problems and situations that threaten to wake us. In this he was challenging the theorists who put forward a physiological theory of the causation of dreams -- the "cheese and pickle" school who believed that dreams were caused by internal or external physical stimuli.

But the psychological and physiological theories are not necessarily incompatible. In fact, modern research is moving toward a synthesis that may soon give us a coherent, comprehensive understanding of the causes, nature, and meaning of dreams and dreaming.

Norman Mackenzie-a lecturer in social studies at the University of Sussex-discusses these most recent and exciting researches against the background of our developing knowledge of sleep and dreaming. Experiments seem to show that dreaming is related to physical rhythms of the body in sleep. At the same time research into dream deprivation points to our need to dream to preserve our mental balance. Norman MacKenzie concludes that we are on the threshold of discoveries that will dramatically enlarge our knowledge of the human mind, bringing us to a new self-knowledge that may prove to be "one of the golden keys to human freedom."
