The Maison Margiela "Replica" sneaker—widely known as the GAT (German Army Trainer)—is a high-fashion tribute to a military surplus classic. Originally issued to West German soldiers in the 1970s, it was famously reimagined by Martin Margiela to merge utilitarian design with luxury ready-to-wear.

The Origins: German Army TrainersIn the 1970s and 1980s, the West German military required a versatile, durable indoor training shoe for their soldiers. To fulfill this massive demand, the army contracted major sportswear manufacturers, notably Adidas and Puma, producing about half a million pairs featuring a white leather upper, grey suede overlays at the toe, and a distinct gum sole.The Margiela DiscoveryFollowing the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and subsequent downsizing of the German military, hundreds of thousands of these sneakers flooded army surplus and secondhand shops across Europe. In the early 1990s, Belgian designer Martin Margiela discovered several pairs of these vintage trainers while shopping in Austria.
