1960 Elizabeth II South African Bronze Penny

This is an original 1960 South African 1 Penny coin, issued during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. It was one of the last bronze pennies minted before South Africa became a republic in 1961 and moved to a decimal currency system.

The reverse shows the historic sailing ship Dromedaris, the vessel that brought Jan van Riebeeck to the Cape in 1652. The wording Suid Afrika and South Africa appears around the top, with the date 1960 above the ship and the denomination 1D below.
