*Fairy Washboard* is the common name for _Haworthiopsis limifolia_, a small succulent known for its textured, ridged leaves that look like a miniature washboard. 

1. *What it looks like*
- *Leaves*:
 Dark green, triangular, stiff, and pointed with pronounced horizontal ridges on both surfaces. The ridges are why it’s called “file-leafed haworthia” too.
- *Rosette*: 
Forms compact, stemless rosettes 4-6 inches wide and tall. Some clones get up to 7 inches.
- *Flowers*:
 Slender tubular white/greenish flowers on stalks up to 16 inches tall, usually in late summer to fall.
- *Variegated forms*:
 ‘Variegata’ has creamy white or yellow streaks on the dark green leaves. 

2. *Origin & growth habit*
- *Native to*: 
Eastern South Africa, Eswatini/Swaziland, and southern Mozambique. It grows in partial shade under shrubs or rocks.
- *Type*: 
Perennial, slow-growing succulent in the Asphodelaceae family, related to aloe.
- *Habit*: 
Forms dense rosettes that produce offsets/clumps over time. 

3. *Care tips*
*Light*: 
Bright, indirect light for 4-6 hours daily. Too much direct sun can burn the leaves. It tolerates low indoor light better than most succulents. 

*Water*:
 “Soak and dry” method. Water thoroughly, then let soil dry completely before watering again. Overwatering is the main killer and causes root rot. Water less in winter/dormancy. 

*Soil*: 
Gritty, well-draining mix - 50-70% mineral grit like pumice, perlite, or coarse sand. Pot must have drainage holes. 

*Temp/Hardiness*: 
Prefers 60-80°F. Hardy in USDA zones , down to ∼30°F for short periods. Go dormant in peak summer heat. 

*Fertilizer*: 
Sparingly, once or twice in growing season with low-nitrogen, balanced fertilizer. 

4. *Propagation & maintenance*
- *Propagation*: 
Easiest by separating offsets that grow around the base. Can also use seeds or leaf cuttings.
- *Repotting*:
 Every 2-3 years or when root-bound.
- *Pests*: 
Generally pest-resistant, but watch for mealybugs and spider mites if overwatered.
- *Pet safe*: 
Listed as pet safe. 

5. *Other notes*
- It’s considered a good beginner plant because it tolerates neglect.
- In traditional African folklore it’s said to bring good luck and protection. Some also display it near doorways as a protective charm.
- Studies show extracts have antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. 

It works great for windowsills, desks, and succulent arrangements.
